Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: The midden in the north shelter is now gone, and after a long, cold shower, most of the midden has left me as well. The midden held several interesting finds, among them plenty of obsidian and bones. Based on percussion technique analysis and provinance of the obsidian, the midden deposits were dated to level VIII, or North G. Among the smaller finds were egg shells from geese that had been hatched. I was informed by Jackie from faunal remains that these eggshells might be indicators of the domestication of birds. If this is the case, the dating based on the obsidian suggests that this is one of the earliest pieces of evidence of domesticated birds.

I am now back with my initial team in building 132: Arek, Duygu and Kerim, whom I have been listening to and checking in on while working my way down the midden. Currently waiting for a green light to keep on removing infill around the foundation burials of B. 77 and try to find out what lies beneath the infill below B. 77.
