Name: | JL, FC | Team: | | Date: | 7/22/2015 | Entry: | Over the last week, we have removed the remaining room fill from the excavation of 1999 which was stuck against the south and east walls in order to get into phase with the earliest known phase (E) of B17, space 170. We have experienced difficulties in connecting features to the matrix of the previous excavations (eg a hearth potentially cutting through the floors left behind in the fill and a basin which lined the wall and seemingly featured shelves, but of which the structure is no longer present), While it is justifiable to leave room fill in order to shore up walls, it would have been easier if the features running partially into the fill were left standing so as to facilitate their final excavation and documentation.
While getting in phase with B17E, a number of potential pits needed to be excavated, including an oval pit close to the burials excavated in 1999 (F.564 and F.576 respectively) which can be clearly discerned from picture 6.37 in the 2007 report on the 1995-99 excavations. This is now confirrmed as a burial containing the remains of an adolescent individual. It is unclear why this burial was left unexcavated or left unmentioned as a focus for future fieldwork. | | Download this Entry |
