Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today in TPC Trench 3 we set about removing an oven that was found on top of an older wall. The oven appears to predate the Hellenistic, but we remain unsure about a precise date. I found that this particular unit was very difficult to identify logical boundaries for when excavating, as they were only visible by digging. While this might not have phased a more experienced, knowledgeable excavator, I was very conscious of my lack of experience and not accidentally imposing artificial boundaries on the pit. A noteworthy aspect of this unit is the amount of pottery that has been found, mostly localised in the centre of the pit. This includes both diagnostic and undiagnostic pieces, and is quite contrary to another oven found in TPC that contained mostly animal bone, according to fellow TPC excavator JH. On the advice of JH, a second 30 L flotation sample was collected from the lower levels of the pit to better analyse the fill. Further excavation will be done tomorrow.
