Excavation Diary Entry

Name: CAW
Team:
Date: 7/26/2015
Entry: At TPC Trench 3, we continued the excavation of unit 31311 as part of the removal of feature 7159, an oven or fire installation. This involved the removal of a collapsed wall of the oven, and taking further samples for areas of the pit containing phytoliths and charcoal. The main artefact type recovered is pottery, appearing to be localised in roughly the centre of the pit. Although some diagnostic pieces have been found, they are predominantly handles. The rest of the sherds are mostly undiagnostic. Bone has also been found, but in small quantities and not well preserved. The pit has now been excavated down to a reddish clay layer, however a large piece of baked clay remains in the centre and at this point cannot be removed. The pit is to be given a final cleaning and photographed tomorrow.
