Entry: | At last I managed to seriously start removing deposits in space 172. Got rid of the last of the 1960’s backfill and miraculously bin F.466 didn’t collapse. There are now a number of features showing up.
F.517 is some form of wall feature, possibly part of a plastered post.
F.514 - 515 - 516 are three relatively small bins at the western end of the space. I removed their infills - (4669), (4670) and (4672) and it appears that F.515 and F.516 have similar primary fills (4671) and (4673) which contain distinctive red ochre. (4671) also had a flint blade lying in the ochre. There also appears to be a possible bone tool built into the bin structure. It is clear that the bins are incremental a la building 5 and not all built at once so I will have to sort out of the sequence, there are also hints that there may be an earlier underlying structure.
As Wendy is not available I am supposed to cut some blocks for her which will be interesting, I will also have to sample the ochre deposits to death and sample outside the bins. I hope this doesn’t slow me down too much but the space is obviously going to take a little while given the complexity of the bins. Once again I am feeling schizophrenic, on one hand I love having interesting archaeology to dig whilst on the other I worry about the time it will take to dig it as we have already used up two and a half months.Entered By: Craig Cessford |
