Entry: Excavated wall collapse/slump ( 4753 ) in the SE corner of space 178. Post-Mellart collapse? Alongside the N-S wall ( F.467 ) this directly overlay a layer of grey material (no number yet ) which survives only under the wall slump. This material doesn’t respect the division between the N & S of the space. It is either something to do with Mellart and we dug the rest of it away when we came down to the archaeology in this space....or Mellart excavated it as far as the collapse ( 4753 )...but that implies that ( 4753 ) is Neolithic collapse and that the unit below is Neolithic (assoc. with abandonment phase?) ...but that would mean that the building wasn’t cleaned out and backfilled immediately. So we need to prioritise the unit under ( 4753 ) and see whether it looks like trample from Mellart’s boots or not...it does like a bona fide archaeological layer to me. There are also one or two dirty grey layers at the S end of the space largely under where ( 4753 ) was removed, although they extend further N, which might also be looked at.Entered By: Richard Turnbull
