Entry: Yesterday Pete and I did three cores to determine the undelying archaeology. It turns out that the archaeologIcal deposI;ts go down to c.999.3 to 999.2m OD then there is a thin layer of alluvium on to marl. This is higher than Mellaart records which is good news and it looks like we wiill reach naturtal, provided the shoring gets sorted out.

Today I removed an in-situ burnt deposit (4826) and then proceeded to mattock a neonate burial in a basket, F.525. Removed it as quickly as possible, about 2 ½ hours and then removed a lower dump/midden (4824). The discovery of a burial confirms part of Mellaarts description of the deep sounding and is interesting as it is presumably in an external area. It is also interesting as it may be associated with burnt deposit (4826) which may be linked to neonates inside buildings being close to ovens. All things considered we got rid of it fairly rapidly which is what we need to do to make progress, hopefully future obstacles will be removed as quickly.Entered By: Craig Cessford
