Entry: End of another week. Shoring isn’t quite finished but is really close. We have managed to remove between 0.5 and 0.9m of deposit this week, the variation being due to slope, which is over our target. It has mainly been general dump layers (5286)/(5289)/(5290)/(5294)/(5296)/(5297) with a few small cut features including a gully (5295) and small ‘scoops’ (5285) and (5293). We are often having to dig several layers as one unit as we don’t have the time to try and trace subtle differences between different layers. Overall I am fairly happy with this as we are still managing to follow the more important horizons and the minor changes are probably relatively unimportant. The artefact assemblages seem to be keeping the lab specialists interested and there appear to be some similarities with KOPAL material especially with the clay objects. I still think that we are probably effectively digging outside the core of the early settlement but am not really sure how to categorise the area we are working in - some form of dumping area with intermittent localised activities? It is probably impossible to be more definite given the size of the trench.Entered By: Craig Cessford
