| Entry: | Jason came up this morning and did the first shot of building 10 in it's entirety since we began excavating this year. Removed a narrow strip of horizontal plaster with red pigment on the surface (10615) that lay along the E.edge of F.1314 & F.1317. This may represent where plaster lipped off the side of the platforms and over the floor with only this thin strip surviving. Alternatively it may have something to do with a pedestal? to the east which the Greeks excavated that John had in his reconstruction drawing which he brought with him on a visit this morning.
Then with Alex began removal of the first of the next set of floors starting from the south end of the buildings near the oven(s) which Roddy is dealing with at the moment. Took off one small area of floor (10614) which extended north to approximately the line of the north face of platform F.1314 and then petered out. Cleaning up after the removal of this floor noticed that could now see a strip of mortar which was a continuation of a north face of F.1314 and that there is a wedge shaped addition to platform F.1314 to excavate - (10613) the painted plaster is on the N. face of this addition. The mortar edge of the platform turns S but on a line further to the east and then returns west again close to the oven(s). The upstanding pot that has been visible in this part of the room with floors lapping up to it is now within this earlier platform boundary.
Started to remove another floor (10619) - spent some time trying to puzzle out the sequence to excavate next but looks like (10619) runs over another floor which lies over agrey gritty horizon that is visible in various parts of the room so probably extends acrosss the whole room. (10619) also laps over a thin plaster floor layer which lies under where the platform extension F.1317 was located. This in turn is over a make-up layer which is butting up against the plaster face (10613).Entered By: Richard Turnbull |
