On the 6th of July 2004 we started excavating space 112, former Mellaart building 9, South area. The particular space was excavated by Mellaart in 1963 and its south part was also excavated in the late 90's. Our excavation is focused on the Northern part of space 112. Today we removed most of Mellaart's backfill (U. 10800) and we cleared the top of the walls on the North, East and West which define the space. The backfill of grey, dark yellow and dark brown colour was heterogeneous; in some areas it was loose and soft, while the other areas were strong and compact. It consisted of clay, silt loam and sandy silt loam. No particular patterns in relation to the colour, consistency or texture of the layer could be defined. The inclusions were rare and consisted of a small piece of obsidian, wall plaster (west wall, F. 287), pieces of a clay ball and a few animal holes. Some samples of the plaster with red pigments were taken by the conservator for further analysis. Finally, in the section of the space (between the south, already excavated part of the space and the northern part) we could detect human remains and a cut next to the eastern wall (F. 259), possibly related to the foundation of a support wall above it.Entered By: Constantinos Koutsadelis, Beliz
