Entry: Work has been concentrating on space 228 removing various layers of building debris that are mixtures of ash and collapsed mud brick down to the floor surfaces. Some of these deposits contain interesting faunal remains including a disarticulated sheep skeleton that was partly burnt and put into a cut within the fills of the space above the floors. Also a antler 10029x1 was recovered from just above the floor level.
In the northern portion of the space a platform (F.1409) is present although much of its area has been truncated away by a later Byzantine burial cut (10020). A pit containing the articulating ankle bones of a cattle was cut into the platform
A second platform (F.1410) as now visible an the south western area of the space and appears to be demarcated on its northern and eastern sides by walls that are relatively thin and which met at a point marked by a burnt timber post. Other burnt timbers are placed around the platform and may have been related to the construction of the walls surrounding the platform. The burning of these posts appears to have happened as the fire burnt down the posts but the majority of the burnt ashy deposits are the layers above the platform perhaps suggesting that the event took place after the abandonment of the building. A flat grinding stone and a rubbing stone appear to be situated on the platform but this will but more certain once they are removedand further cleaning is done in the area.Entered By: Lisa Yeomans
