Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Last Thursday I helped Richard take off some floor layers, nothing very exciting to report there. Next i moved to excavate some post holes butting up to what now appears to be a hearth (cut and fill numbers 10633, 10634, 10635). They proved to be 2 shallow pits, maybe too shallow to be post holes - possibly they are baisens.

Today has been very busy, with many context numbers generated and dug out. Today i have been working on the platform on the East side of the building and i began by stripping back layer 10640, which covered the entire surface, slumping slightly towards the hearth and the pot scatter, a possible rubbish bin. This revealed a series of small layers which i then took off more or less on top of each other butting up to the pot scatter (10648, 10651, 10653, 10656, 10658). 10651 was a plaster layer on the wall which was removed after 10648 as it only became apparent that it sealed the layer on removal. Further plaster faces cover other parts of the wall. What was eventually revealed was that the platform had been cut, or built up over part of a possible rubbish dump. Many pieces of pot and bone have been recovered from this area... Some pots appear to the near-complete, if in several pieces. I have begun to excavate the possible rubbish area - Ian has suggested it may represent the area below the ladder, the entrance to the house so ill keep a look out for any signs of post holes. Im going quite slowly because at the moment it looks like a random fill with many different patches of varying soil colours with no coherent order or stratigraphy. A partial floor layer beside the hearth has been revealed, and there is a clear edge to the pit showing up to the North where the area meets the main floor. Tomorrow some of the pots should come free.Entered By: Alex Pryor
