Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Work continues to proceed well. I have spent most of the day supervising the team in action, which I much enjoy. Everyone is very keen to get the upper phase completed by Thursday: then we can show the building off during the weekly site tour at the end of work. I think it will look marvellous. Today's work: Mehmet removed fill around his pit, exposing a series of bones, including sheep/goat scapula, bird bones (the "fish-hook" from yesterday turned out to be a wing bone from a medium sized bird) and a very large horn core which seems to go into the wall separating Spaces 70 and 71, just to the north of the crawl-hole, but it still needs more exposure. Louise continued to expose the curving brick feature which I dislike because it seems so untidy and out of place. It just won't go away, but the lower fill is going under it so it will be out by Thursday, if all goes to plan. Nurcan has been removing the northern part of the main N-S baulk through Space 71. Gavin has been clearing down to floor in the SE part of Space 71, removing large fallen chunks of plaster and clearing fill from a pit which cuts through the upper floors, all heavily burnt. Serap has been clearing up her lentils and, after taking deposits down in Space 73, I joined her to take out burnt deposits in front of the central feature on the N face of the main S wall of Space 71. This is turning out nicely with a plastered relief feature, partly exposed last year. There are lots of lentils in the fill and also sheep/goat horns, heavily toasted to the texture of "burnt Crunchie" as we could best describe it.Entered By: Roger Matthews
