Entry: Today we continued excavting subfloor units in two spaces.

In space 112 cut 10811 and its fill 10812 were excavated. This is a large ovoid cut whose function cannot be determined. It might cut a skeleton below 10813, but we are not sure.

Another cut 10817, with two fills 10820 (lower) and 10816 (upper) was also excavted. Although this ovoid cut was more clearly defined, here too its function is ellusive. The lower fill 10820 consisted of bricky clay with red painted plaster fragments. As it is loacted next to the wall it might have been used for the retrieval of something.

Finally the sub floor packing was excavated as an arbitrary layer in this area. The packing consisted of a reddish brown loose clay. No burial cuts were discernable, although skeletons 10813 and 1814 are present in the southern section not far below. The aim of the excavation of this arbitrary layer was to reach the layer of the particular burials.

In space 231, the room to the north of space 112 the sub floor packing was also removed in unit 10819. This contained an very large amount of stones and charcoal, which seems rather exceptional in such a context.

Finally a plastered ledge 10815 was excavted that was the thershold between spaces 112 and 231. From this plastered ledge it is clear that the earliest floors of spaces 112 and 231 were comtemporary and that there was a step up to the noerthern space 231. Due to this relation we can stratigraphically relate floor 10806 (space 112) and 10810 (space 231) and the packings below unit 10818 (space 112) and 10819 (space 231) (which merge after the removal of the threshold anyhow. The resaon why space 231 was higher from the outset is unclear, and seems at odds with the idea that the most ritual spaces are also the highest since 231 is a storage room.Entered By: Bleda During
