Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Waiting for Godot

Why are we here? We are waiting. Waiting for what? Waiting for the tent. Not quite ready to hang ourselves, but we are increasingly scrambling to find things that we can excavate without having to touch the baulk on the walls. The windstorm this afternoon contributed significantly to the confusion and we were able to only take out the "safest" of fills, although now that we are down to the level of the features I get nervous every time a bone peeks out. Really, we are doing this in the wrong order. But looking at how quickly Emma's red paint is fading in the next trench, I see the sense. I had a pretty useless day: I did paperwork and drew all morning, and as soon as I started excavating, the wind came up.

The morning passed quickly with DGN's (our golden goose) discovery of another horn core (7928). We think it was covered in plaster, IHo and SF think it's salt. Only testing will solve the mystery. After SHL had gone as far as she could on the platform - discovering a mass of more painted plaster - she and SLS had a go at the SE corner, knocking out most of the extraneous fill (7925).

We had fantanstic help from the specialists and conservators today. They examined our painted plaster and told us it was from the wall, not the platform - they took pieces of our plaster/salt to test - they consolidated two and lifted one horn core. I felt pretty lucky to have them all around to help. DHN and I extended his unit 7926 toward the East, along the E edge of the N platform. We didn't make much progress. Hopefully, tomorrow the digging conditions will get better...Entered By: UK
