| Entry: | Work went very well today. We had a visit from the Kilise Tepe team which they seemed to enjoy. We return the trip on Friday. Digging went so well today that we are just about back on track to meet tomorrow's self-imposed deadline for completing the excavation of the upper phase of Building 1. Mehmet and I continued excavating the large pit against the E face of the W wall of Space 71. The pit is big and we now have a clear view of the multiple floors cut through by the pit. It looks like the lower phase of the building will have some very lavish and level floors. The lower floors lie some 10-15 cm below the upper series of floors. Louise excavated down to floors in the W part of Space 71 - we now have floors almost everywhere here and they are connected to the curving wall which is therefore clearly in situ. She also exposed more of a very thick cow horn set into the wall. Gavin finished excavating the lentil platform and he and Serap are completing excavation of deposits down to floor to the N of the lentil platform. There are complex series of steps and dips in the floor here, as elsewhere. Nurcan worked part of the day and I finished off clearing the N face of the E-W running wall cut by Mehmet's pit. It looks like the N and S parts of the building may have been non-connecting during the upper phase of occupation as there is no way through, unless it be cut by the pit - possibly separate entrances through the roof (as we saw at Fasillar village the other day)? Engin, now joined by Atakan (there were 8 of us digging in Building 1 at one point today), finished excavation of deposits in Space 73 outside the building - the walls are not bottomed on their outer faces but lower architecture is showing up and I don't want to remove parts of walls of buildings whose plans we do not have.Entered By: Roger Matthews |
