Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Two types of activities took place in space 112 on this day. First, the human remains team continued excavating the large burial feature f.1702. Second, I continued the investigation and documentation of the outer walls of space 112.

Some spectacular developments took place in burial feature f.1702. The human remains so far assigned to unit 10813 were separated into two distinct skeleton units, 10813 in the center of f.1702, and 10829 to the west of it.

It became clear after cleaning the surface of f.1702 that skeleton u. 10813 is contained within its own cut, a small ovoid pit about 1 m long and 35 cms wide (unit 10830). The fill of this cut (unit 10831) appeared distinct from the surrounding matrix. The skeleton (u. 10813) contained within it appears to be fully articulated. At the location of the chest a large bone hook was encountered, that has not been lifted yet. The units were assigned to feature 1709.

It seems that at the time when cut 10830 was created the bones of 10814 to the east were shoved aside, as the appear mostly along the edges of this cut. It remains to be established whether the skull at the botom of post retrieval pit 1705 belongs to the same unit. Alternatively it may represent another individual.

In the west the bones of 10813 seem to overly those of skeleton u. 10831, but this needs to be further investigated. Preliminairily it can be suggested that burial f. 1709 represents the latest burial act, disturbing skeleton 10814 and overlying 10829.

With skeleton 10829, that was partly lifted today and which seems fully articulated, a number of objects were found including three incised boars tusks (x finds unit 10829), which may have been worn in a vertical arrangement on the chest, and a number of beads (bone ans stone) also deriving from the chest.

In the north wall 267 was investigated and drawn (see drawing 04/907), and a top plan was made of the eastern wall 259 and its neighbouring features (see drawing 04/906). The relations between these walls are not yet fully understood and will be further investigated. To the south the sequence of this wall was especially complicated and it will probably be necessary to remove walls in order to clarify this issue.Entered By: Bleda During
