Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Realised towards the end of the windy day last week when 'Ancient Clues' was being filmed in our house (the 14th I think) that I was completely fed up with digging endless floors and floor make-up layers. However the last couple of days a welcome respite as I've moved onto platform F.1320 - the central platform to the east which we now know has various burials, which was the reason Discovery Channel were filming in our house last week.
Roddy uncovered an apparent grave cut 11217 in the platform and Scott and Ba ak excavated it - some disarticulated finger and toe bones but didn't hit burials until we had got down 30cm or so and they didn't really seem to fit well within the cut 11217. So the current theory is that the top cut in fact had had the body taken out and that we are through onto earlier burials. So I'm ın the process of taking out layers - plaster surfaces (11226), (11230) and (11241) so far, as well as excavating two cuts 11239 and 11248 - with the aim of releasing another burial cut. Looks like I've got another plaster surface and make-up deposit to go. Cut 11239 looks like a removal pit - i.e. something was taken out from the edge of the platform before the cut was backfilled. Cut 11248 is quite a deep stake or post-hole. Hope to get to a grave cut tomorrow - and the floors in the building are nearly done, should be down to the infill soon and then we'll be dealing with the platforms...Entered By: Richard Turnbull
