Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: In the southern part of space 112 the excavation of the follwing activities took place.

The post retrieval pit feature 1705 was further investigated. It became clear that the skull at the bottom of the pit was in fact located on top of and within the fill of the cut (unit 10807). This situation was drwan on plan 04/913. The skull is thus located in a different context than the scattered bones of skeleton 10814, located along the fringe of burial f1709. It seems that the skull was placed there after a certain amount of depositioning had occurred. For this reason the skull was lifted as unit 10834. It consists of a skull lacking a mandible. Future analysis may clarify whether the skull goes with the bones of 10814 in which case the skull may have been removed and then relocated, or whether 10834 represent an altogether different individual.

To the west the skeleton 10829 was lifted and documented by Marin Pilloud. An arbitrary cut was documented as 10832. The beads found in the vicinity of skeleton were collected as 10833, the arbitrary fill of this unit. The units are tied together in burial feature 1710. However it should be recognized that this is an arbitrary feature and the fill matrix 10833 could not be distinguished from the surrounding matrix 10812.

Marin Pilloud and Sally Graver continued exposing skeleton 10813 in burial feature 1709 ( cut 10830 and fill 10831). The extent of this feature is not entirely clear at present and needs to be explored further, especially its relation to skeleton 10814. Associated with skeleton 10813 two flint points were encountered, that remain to be lifted.

Hopefully we can remove most of the remaing burilas tomorrow, so that next week we can move faster in this area.Entered By: Bleda During
