Entry: | The majority of the room fill has been removed and all features are just about exposed. The Stanford undergraduates are away on a long weekend so Ulrike and I had time today to just slowly excavate some lingering areas and ponder about the relationships. We asked Ruth T. to come in and scratch around in the morning to help us understand the relationships beteween the oven/ fire features, the wall and 'surfaces'. Shahina also came in the afternoon and had a scratch around and confirmed (and contradicted) some of what Ruth had said but I think we have a pretty good feel for what is going on in this space. It is entirely possible that we have two different phases of ovens, both exposed at the same time. UK worked mostly on the fill above a floor surface (U. 7931) in the middle of the room, I worked slightly west of her, removing the remaining baulk above a plastered surface (floor or platform?) U. 7944. This surface seems to be on the same phase as the plastered platform (U. 7927/ F. 1651) but I have not yet exposed it to the wall. To replace our missing students, we borrowed Val from Berkeley and he worked inside the bin area (U. 7921) and it looks like he might have a plastered surface at the bottom of it. We'll explore it further tomorrow. A large amount of animal bones has come out of this unit but the soil matrix still looks like fill and the outside walls are plastered. No real thoughts yet as to what this structure thing might be. The horn cores (U. 7920) have finally been removed. We will be able to get into this corner tomorrow and get this section (U. 7949) down to the same level as the rest of the room.Entered By: SHL |
