Entry: | Our computer is really messed up. The screen keeps flickering; making it extremely difficult to see. We had a slow day today. The students are away, and while V.S. from Berkeley was kind enough to help out, we did proceed at a much slower pace than we have been. As a result, it was much easier to recognize our features. In 7931, I took off the rest of the fill on the floor to reach floor level. The corner near the north platform was marked by thin layers of ashy deposits. Serena (SHL) took down 7944 to expose a regular, whitish floor suface. VS continued behind the "dividing wall" or "basin" taking out room fill (7921). He came down on a surface in the bottom which, although slightly elevated in relation to our other surfaces, may represent the bottom layer of some sort of storage area. The conservators took out the last two horn cores, 7920 1 and 4. Mira and Ruth gave input on the southern area of the space, which has been extremely confusing with its various layers of plastered surfaces, feature walls, and burnt material. The current favorite theory is that we actually are seeing TWO hearths/ovens, not just one. One is under 7943 - we can just see the top bricks and the arms coming out. This one may not be attached to the south wall. The other one we can see so far only in the presence of heavily burnt gunk in front of the bench/platform in the southeast corner. The sequence is still unclear, and will hopefully emerge as we get rid of the last bit of fill and give the room a good clean.Entered By: UK |
