Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Quite a good day, although we're still stuck in our arbitrary space divisions. As soon as the walls are completely out I shall allocate a new space number, I'll also have to back track and reallocate certain units below the walls to the new space number. I began excavating the remainder of floors (1084) which represented all the laminated floors covering spaces 107 and 108 and traced through the opening, some of these were excavated in space 107 last season. The patch I began removing today was fairly ephemeral, it overlay a make-up/levelling deposit (1512), this was a thicker layer towards the west wall than to the east where it was observed in a sliver of Mellaart section. This overlay a floor (1514), which was not heavily plastered or laminated and had a fair slope towards the west. Was this a deliberate slope or slumping due to the underlying rubbish layers? the walls don't appear to have been affected. Cutting (1514) was pit cut (1574), the same as (1077) excavated in the eastern half of the space but not traced until lower down. Ali had to go to Konya today with Ian so Anwen continued on the baulk dividing 106 and 107. The midden layer they're excavting is very rich in animal bone. Anwen is going to be off site for a couple of days as we have a backlog of unit entries. Both Mary and Roddy have been working on these, they manage to input three sheets each per hour. The slow pace is due to a number of reasons, the computer is slow, not all of the boxes are being filled in on site and overall there is a lot of information to input. Jon had to work on pottery today so Mary has taken over excavating his wall, feature 58. The horizon of mixed bricks overlay a more uniform construction which Mary thinks represents an horizon of rebuild, this should show up clearly in the north section. Roddy worked to the east of space 105 with Atakhan, they're coming down to bricky/clayey fills, could this be deliberate infill of an abandoned building or wall collapse, ie the initial stage of an open area? Roddy and Mary are parting ways although not over a long distance. Banu will work with Mary, both teams in the same area, one to the east and the other on the wall relationship to the NE of 105. Banu and Nermin have cleaned space 114, Mell Shrine 14, to the level Mellaart excavated to, it's very heavily eroded and there may still be wall collapse/erosion to come out. I worked on creating recording forms for most of the day.Entered By: Shahina Farid
