Entry: | Pretty much caught up in the burial sequence for the last few days. However taking time over cleaning a morass of dead peoples bits unit 11608 has allowed us to identify at least two articulated burials. Some of the disarticulated bone must come from disturbed burials below but this process of interment through earlier burials may not account for them all. The Burials appear to be in cuts although the jury is still out on this one, although Im buggered if I can see any real edges as yet. We may have to assume 'cuts' if lower bodies have been cut through. Still if the bodies are in a sequence of cuts then it leaves the question of timescale and how long it took to place the bodies in the ground with the intention of building a platform over them. All the burials are cut into or are in the backfill of the building below. The backfilled room deposit appears untruncated (apart from the burials) and there appears to be no evidence of weathering or of accumulations one might expect in an open area of Catal if it was left open for any legth of time. This raises question of whether the building was partailly constructed or even roofed prior to the insertion of the burials and the subsequent finishing of the internal features. Again the qustion remains how long did it take to complete the burial sequence. What this does suggest is a cerain degree of forethought and planning going into building future structures as the burials are not randomly deposited but there appers to be every intention of constructing a platform over them at an early stage and perhaps the possibility that the building was constructed but left as a place for the dead prior to it becoming one for the living. Phew!! all very spooky stuff and probably rubbish but there you go.Entered By: RR |
