Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: A slow day today, most of which was spent recording walls as I mentioned yesterday. Jon took the opportunity to work on pottery as he'd got to a stage where we need Anwens area to catch up in space 107, now 115. I'm doubtful about the foundation cut Ali took out yesterday and the one we excavated as (1502) in the first half of the room along the S. Is it a wall? The fill has been very bricky in composition but not brick and mortar like, so is the fill that we took out actually the wall that abuts a middling wall this side of the walls to shrines 1 and 8? To the east space 106 has never had a S wall so the scenario might be that there was a double wall, the N wall to shrine 8 nad a S wall to something else. Then space 107 was constructed with party walls to the E and W and abutting earlier walls to the N and S. So space 106 was formed by these and the existing walls until after a certain time of infilling, although the infill appears to be homogenous one event [ units (1052), (1053) and (1063)], and a N wall was constructed and thats the reason for its base level being so high and a similar construction took place to the S, there are the base remains of bricks but so shallow there is no way of telling what it represents. Furthermore in this SE corner section is a very faint cut, one that both Jon and Mary have been aware of, or rather aware of a change but unable to define. It is faintly visible in section and unsurprising that neither of them could define it as an event. What is really becoming apparent is that the walls do need to be investigated before we excavate too much as they get totally out of hand. To the N Roddy has begun to take the corner of four spaces apart whilst Naomi and Jessica, joined in the afternoon by Banu, have begun excavating space 113. This space has bits of floor and wall plaster around the edges that Mell left in but on such a small scale I've told Naomi to excavate them as one. I really don't think they'll be informative in such a state. Cicek, joined by Meltem in the afternoon continued to excavate space 116. I suggested to Jon that as this space is small we could try 3-D ing all pot sherds for him to study the spatial distribution etc, if the information is negligible he'll never ask again and if it is informative, well we'll see.Entered By: Shahina Farid
