Entry: Arived on site 04/06/2006 Spent the first week cleaning the South area and removing sand bags from the west strip of the 4040 area and cleaning the loose to reveal the late phase Neolithic structures (phases five or six) these had all been identified and their outlines planed and both Shania and Ian had come up with a plan of attack for this seasons excavations.

11/06/06 began excavation in the north west area of the 4040 with Dan, Leisa and Richard, excavated a shallow pit or post hole (12900) {12901] near the surface which cut the wall of building 59 space 277, we then began to reduce the back fill in building 59 space 276 and 277, in 277 a Neolithic crouched burial was identified [12906] cut into the backfill (12903) of building 59. The skeleton 12905 was an adult male laied on his left side with his head in the west his right hand grasping his knee. The bones had suffered from being so close to the surface at the top of the mound and displayed damage from both root activity and from the dreaded Sussluck, the veracious burrowing ground predator of the Konya basin.

REP REPORT

The demolition fill (12903) of space 277, continues under building 60, space 278 to the south, however to the north no evidence of this later structure remain due mainly to surface erosion. In the North West corner of space 277 a single crouched Neolithic burial [12906] was identified and excavated, it contained a single adult male skeleton (12905), the remains were however very degraded due to their proximity to the surface, suffering from root action and the activity of burrowing animals.

Building 60, space 278 appears to be the highest in the Neolithic sequence in the north end of the 4040 area, preliminary excavations have revealed two bench structures within the space. The structure has been slightly truncated to the south by the east west aligned foundation trench of a large Byzantine building [12628] and it seams clear from the section that the Neolithic structure also has at least one platform in the southeast corner. To the north east of space 278 (building 60) is what appears to be a second much degraded platform with a second burial beneath.Entered By: Michael House
