Entry: | We finished excavating the midden deposit (12961) in space 60 the day before yesterday. This deposit turned out to be quite thick in places along the eastern edge of the space against the wall F.2211. This deposit was only present along the eastern side of this space. The material directly below (12961) is quite hummocky and appears to be a mix of midden material and demolition material and it looks like a lot of the remaining deposits in this space are similar. Towards the west side of the space can see another pure midden deposit coming through between two more mixed deposits. We had a priority tour around today and Kathy said that the bone from (12946) includes many large fragments and is not abraded so the idea that this space was part of a linked series of spaces forming a road is rubbish really. That’s what we thought anyway. A lot of material still to come out of this space but for now we ve moved to the south into space 279. Here Lisa and Dave (who has joined us pending further surveying) took off a layer to clean up & clarify things (12968 ), we then excavated a small isolated patch of midden (12970), from which we had a nice piece of worked bone that Halouci found in the dry sieve. A curved piece of boar s tusk according to Lisa incised with crosses which looks like it is a complete section of a necklace. We then began the excavation of a large pit, which was partly excavated last year apparently and is partly truncated by the large foundation trench for the Byzantine building, so we could see the upper part in section pre¬ex. Finished taking out the upper fill (12971), (from which we had a polished greenstone axe head as an x find) and now into a lower fill (12972). We re now down below the level of the base of the foundation trench and still going.Entered By: RT |
