The south eastern corner of building 60 was completely truncated by the east west foundation of a Byzantine building [12628] this showed clearly showed in section 06/208 the obliquely truncated southern wall core of the Neolithic building F.2216 and a platform in the southeast corner F2212.
Several features cut the back fill (12911) of building including a pit [12926], a burnt post or driven stake [12913] and a hearth [12915]. The back fill of building 60 was as with most of the other structures sterile accept for a few animal bones. Once removed the internal lay out of the abandonment phase became apparent with two benches dividing the space. Bench F.2213 extending west from the eastern wall F.2215 about half way along its entire length. To the north of this was a platform F.2225 with a later platform F.2219 being added to the west. To the south of the bench (2213) was an open area with a platform in the far southeast corner F.2212, this platform contained the cut for the ladder scar F.2210 and was therefore the entrance to the building with the platform acting as the first step.
To the west of the entrance was a narrow bench F.2214 extending north from the southern wall F.2216 this divides the southeast from the southwest, about 1m to the west was another platform or plinth F.2226 continuing in to section (limit of excavation) to the west its relationship with platform 2219 to the north is confused by the late addition of a hearth and erosion due to its proximity to the surface.
The area as on the 02/07/06 has had three distinct phases of activity
Phase 1 - the abandonment phase in which all features discussed above are visable.
Phase 2 - saw the removal of several floor layers (12964) in the south east area which inturn revealed a reduction thhough cutting back of bench 2213 and platform 2219 and re plastering of the newly created faces, the origional platform appeared to extend out as far as the engaged pilaster, this phase plan also sees the removal of the later platform addition 2218 to the north of bench 2213. The removal of floors to the south west also revaled a change in feature 2214, a narrow bench extending north from the southern wall now appears to be a liped platform abbuting platform 2226 to the west.
Phase 3 - saw the removal of yet more floor sequences in the south east freeing platform 2214 which in this phase is removed creating a larger open plan room.Entered By: Michael House |
