Entry: We have a few developments to report on the pit (filled with 12970 and 12971) but generally work has been slow today as we put up another shelter which took half of the day. The layer (12976) sealing the pit contained fragment of late pot and so I now think that the layer (12970) above this was redeposited midden that had been washed downslope and deposited over the late construction debri (12976). Therefore the pit is not stratigraphy sealed between two midden deposits so the dating may not be as good as initailly hoped but a large amount of pot has still been recovered from the fills. Also today we found a large figurine in (12972) which looks like a horse to me and has notch like tally down its back. The edges of the pit are difficult to find higher up and as we continued digging today, the pit actually seems to copmprise of two intercutting pits but no cut was higher up and the tip lines continue across the fills so they must have been dug at the same time and backfilled together. Lower down the pit(s) cut a fine sandy silt layer and it is possible that the pits were originally dug to gain access to this material. Initially this worried me since it could have meant that the pits were backfilled with the redeposited midden and it would therefore not be such a useful unit for the specilists to prioritise but since tip lines are visible it seems more probable that the backfilling of the pit used new rubbish material rather than simply the material that was dug out.
We didn't get around to prioritising the units today since we were up ladders and stretching bungees when the specililsts did their rounds- we will prioritise them next time.Entered By: LY
