Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Shahina and Ian around this morning. Some scepticism about our lime burning idea but I think we persuaded Shahina. Ian said that there is no lime burning in Level V, but maybe it is some sort of plaster processing, and also that the light coloured layer seems too soft to be a lime burning deposit, and that there doesn t appear to have been the high temperatures required as the underlying deposits haven t been changed. But this may be because we re near the edge of the deposit and if we were to excavate further east we ed find that evidence.
Finished excavating (13112) today. We ve exposed the partial remains of a building (64) to the west and north of the pitting area. On the west side looks like we have the remains of a threshold or crawl hole and maybe the start of a return of the southern wall. To the north we have a small squarish room but that s about it. Looks like they demolished this building in an atypical way for Catal, that is they had no intention of back filling it and building on top as normal, they just demolished it and then dug pits. We think that (13112) was probably cut by our westernmost pit.Entered By: RT
