Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Yesterday we opened the souhtern area of building 52 with a view to undertaking limited excavation, in order to better understand the layout and development of the building. Cleaning today showed space 254 is in fact two spaces, and the platform recorded in 2005 as F2009 is in fact a small room. This room was accessed through a crawl hole. Fill 12687 is currently being removed from this small space (which as yet has no number) to reveal floor layers. The southern extent of building 52 is defined by a single wall. A second wall is added to this at a later date creating a thin space along the southern extent of building 52. This space is probably an external space (no floors are visible) and may have acted to support the S wall of building 60, and keep middin material away from the building. The space may have also provided a practical function, such as a storage area.

It is now appears a double wall runs through the centre of building 52. This combined with the difference in floor levels in the eastern and western rooms suggests to me that the building was originally two smaller structures which were 'knocked through' to create a single larger building.Entered By: DE
