Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: I was working in Space 279 with Lisa in the pits, but now with the arrival of the Stanford students I've moved south with Rachel (into Space 280) and Lisa has carried on in the pits with Ilana. We started by taking out a midden deposit identified by Doru (12654) that was overlying a building, (Building 66) and it looks like there are still a couple of smaller middeny deposits to take out here, and then we moved to the part of the midden that lies west of this building. Excavated a few small dumps of material that could be seen in the section created by the Byzantine foundation cut, (13134, 13137 & 13138) which released a more substancial deposit that we could see in section and also that was fairly clear in plan (13139). We excavated that deposit today which took us down onto a horizon of what looks like in-situ lime-burning similar to what we saw in Space 279. We've assigned unit numbers to the pale coloured 'lime' layer (13141) as well as to the burnt layer below (13142). We've taken a couple of samples from (13141) which we hope will identify exactly what this layer is and whether it's consistent with our lime-burning theory. It also looks like there will be quite a bit of burnt bone in (13142). There was a small patch of 'lime' & burning above these two layers which I included as part of (13139).Entered By: RT
