Entry: We've excavated the 'lime-burning deposits' (13141) & (13142). One figurine head out of the burnt layer. When we did a general clean of the area this morning we found that we had a line of stones poking through our midden deposits to the south of where we've been excavating. We've been vaguely aware of these stones for a few days, because we would hit them when shovelling up our loose, but it wasn't until our clean that we realised that they were arranged so neatly. The first thought was a Neolithic stone wall? But when the priority tour came round it was suggested that they might be something to do with the lime-burning (though not for the episode associated with the layers we've just excavated, as the 'stones' are stratigraphically lower). This makes sense to me - the stones look like they might be limestone or maybe they are a by-product of the process, although it does appear too as if they've been carefully arranged into a wall. Took one as a sample - Liz is going to take a look for us to see if she can identify what they are. Also when we cleaned back after the excavation of (13142) we could see what I would immediately suspect to be the top of the wall of a bin, if it wasn't for the fact that we are in an external midden area. Now we are excavating the scorched layer physically below (13142) - (13151), we can see what look like more possible edges of features poking through. These edges appear yellow rather than white plaster, but that may be the effect of heat. Generally in this part of the space the layers are tipping down towards the east, and we have one large yellow grey deposit which is lying against the east wall of Building 66 and also within the walls which I can also see in the base of the foundation trench. Can also see another pair of 'lime-burning' deposits coming through at the base of the section.Entered By: Richard Turnbull RT
