Entry: | Started the week by getting rid of the 'bin' in the midden - Shahina was sceptical about this and rightly so since it turned out to be a cunningly constructed sosluk burrow. Realised this morning that the the ashy deposits of midden just within the NE corner of the Byzantine foundation cut and truncated by it had been released (by the excavation of (13151)), so we began the excavation of the uppermost layer (13143). This layer was very loose and ashy and on the south side lay within a cut but to the west spread beyond the edge of the cut. Rachel found a nice animal figurine in this layer, species ambiguous - and also from the sieve we had a sherd of pot that looked like it might be another face pot similar to the one we had in space 279, suspiciously nose-like. Took (13143) off then started to take off the layer underneath (13159), or layers since this is a compound layer - many fine lenses of ash, charcoal etc. Bit of a tool shortage at the moment - spent the day working with the banana shovel and a mini-hoe.Entered By: RT |
