Now I will start another one.
Today we finished removing the second layer of the topsoil to a depth of at least 30cm in the northern part (13702) of Trench 5 at the West Mound. After breakfast (nice, under the trees, but salt and some knifes were missing, honey and butter would also be fine).
The soil was full of unstratified finds: potsherds, obsidian, grinding stone framents, tile fragments (byzantine?) and while levelling one of the workers found some light orange flint flake.
In the western quarter of this northern half of Trench 5 there is an area of looser soil where I found some big sherds and a lot of bones, some of them may be human bones Eva and Ingmar told me. We have to excavate this pit (?) carefully after taking a picture tomorrow morning.
While cutting the profiles we found in se western profile some bones and sherds deposits, maybe later on we can see wether this are pits or just depends on erosion. Twice we recognized big sherds in the planum so we decided to excavate them carefully, after that we saw just some sherds laying one on top of the others.
The most exciting finds today were a small human figurine and a piece of Obsidian, retouched over nearly the whole surface, maybe an arrowhead or something else, have to ask the Obsidian-Professionals.
After all it was another day of doing stupid excavation work, just digging the dirt out of the trenches. We haven't reached yet the archaeological interesting layers, may be in two day´s.
Tomorrow we will start working at 6 in the mornig, that will be great cause it was really hot outside and after lunch it is really hard to work. I am wondering why they all start at 7 here in Catal cause even under the shelters it must be very hot in the mid-day sun.
It is not clear when we will get our shelters, but when we get them I think we will start working again at 7 ;-(
