Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: With the exception of Helen who was sick today, we worked with the same team as yesterday. It was very hot and the wind kept changing its direction after lunch, causing us trouble with the dust. Besdes, we got a set of new small hoes (capa) and two umbrellas to provide shade for office work. Tomorrow we will start at 6 o'clock to benefit from the cool moning and the better light conditions then - today at 7 o'clock the structures in the trench were already blurred by the glare. As for breakfast, yesterday's place got inaccessible since a nest of bees decided to settle there, so we had to move to the trees close to our toilet area.

The surveyors put in nails today, so we now at least know where we are. The B trench is 670,00-680,00 E and 970,00-980,00 N, while A is 685,00 - 695 E and 970,00 - 980,00 N. Hopefully tomorrow we get levels, too, because I do not feel comfortable digging blindly the third day already.

In Trench B, which had to be renamed 6 today, we exposed first traces of architecture structures within the light grey hard soil today. While we left the stone and loose soil patches in the northern part untouched, the southern half revealed yellow patches close to the profile. Roughly parallel to the profile, the yellow colour seems to form a straight line, which is interrupted by two patches of loose earth which also display more roots than the structure. So I think that the light grey as well as the yellow material represents structural mud, presumably rubble from walls, whereas the loose soil represents later pits that disturbed the structure. We cut the profiles and started to clean the area for photo and graphics tomorrow, and then unit 13700, which had to be renamed 13800, will be closed. Also this trench got a figurine find today.

In Trench A, now Trench 5, we found a similar situation close to the north profile, but we seem to be a bit higher up there still. We extended unit 13702 into the SW corner of the trench and cut the profiles. Close to the south profile, a pit containing some human phalanges appeared. After final cleaning and brushing tomorrow there will be a photo and graph.

Mustafa told me today that our mound's real name is Küçükhüyük, the small mound.Entered By: ER
