Excavation Diary Entry

Name: Christoph Skowranek Doru
Team: West-Buffalo/Camb
Date: 7/24/2006
Entry: Today we started working at 6 am, it was great! Cool outside and not so much people in the morning.
But I heared at lunch that we woke up some people by slamming doors and so on, wondering cause I heard not so many slammed doors and we were quiet in the courtyard?

On site we started brushing the western part of Area 5, so we get the basal boundary of 13702, our arbitrary, nearly 15cm layer we removed yesterday. First I finished the southern profile, which I left incomplete yesterday. But there was nothing important coming out of the soil, some bones I still coming out of the profile, and it seems like there were some animal nests or burrows in which the bones and all the sherds are.
After I had finished the profile I joined the brushing team and we brushed together the planum working in a line, so it worked very well and we were really fast. The only problem was the lack of good brushes, cause when we tried to brush the looser soil the hard brushes didn't work (later we get some more of the soft brushes).
After finishing brushing we saw in the planum that the structures are even unclear yet, maybe there is a big pit in the mid of the area and another one in the southern part of the western section. We have to have a look when the whole area is at one level.
After Nejat took some photo's we started in se eastern half of area 5, removing 15 cm of the soil (13703) so we are at the same level throughout the area.
The four workmen we are already working with, started removing the soil but after they were down we showed them how to get a real levelled surface and now it will works i hope. In this eastern section I left the southeastern part unexcavated, cause there is the ashy structure which I would excavate in detail.
There was a collection of sherds and burnt daub (I think), which we also left unexcavated and in the southwestern corner of this half-area there the workers found some bones which might belong to a skeleton. It looks like we reached a human foot, maybe there is a burial?
After breakfast we had a "short" introduction in using the total station, but it didn´t work so easy, so we spend much time on doing nothing, maybe tomorrow we are able to work with this station.Entered By: CS
