Entry: First impressions of the Mellaarts visit which began today. They both seemed very excited by being here and I'm glad we took the risk. They have also been helpful in many ways already - Jimmy remembered where he had dug the sounding below Shrine 8 - 5m by 1m just south of the platforms aginst the northern wall, and on an e-west alignment. he also remembered seeing lines of red plaster just north of the spoil tips on the southern flank of the mound - in fact he says he moved the spoil tips here to look at them more. He says he thought the mound fell away quickly to the south of his main trench area - thats why he had planned to extend to the north. He clearly was unaware of the idea of entraces and said that part walls never occurred in important buldings. On seeing Building 1 he again said he thought it was messy and domestic - clearly he doesnt see it as a shrine even with the cow horn etc. Otherwise he managed to see the wholoe bulding very much in terms of the layout he ws used to. On another matter - began cleaning more in the long trench to the north of North in order to investigate the break of slope - is there an Asikli type wall here?Entered By: Ian Hodder
