Feature 3635

Area: North

Dug in Year: 2014
Feature Type: bench
Feature Subtype:

Location: Located by northern wall F. 3626

Grid X: 1043.2  Grid Y: 1179

F. 3635 is located by the northern wall F. 3626 and seems to abut the northern wall 3626. It might be contemporary with the probable bench as they seem located across the space from one another. Was not excavated.

2014 excavation season:

During the 2014 excavation season it appeared that the feature 3635 was made of two, badly preserved bricks (U.22001) oriented N-S joined by single layer of mortar (U.22002). The upper brick have survived in the thickness of 3cm and it was undoubtedly bonded with the bricks of nearby wall (F.3626). The latter constitute the northern wall of B.108. It is obvious that the part of the feature (F.3635) excavated in 2014 must have been the lowest (foundation) part of a much higher construction that has not survived. Probably the bricks from upper courses of the structure (F.3635) were bonded as well with their counterparts within the wall F.3626, creating additional strength of the relatively long construction of F.3626. That bears a resemblance to wooden post placed next to the walls, or reminds analogy to buttress (known from Chalcolithic). The aim of such proceeding was to prevent possible collapse and slumping aside, as well as prepare stable enough support for final execution of heavy roof. The assumption about buttresses-like function is more plausible in the light of the fact that the B.108 was at some point free standing edifice that stood above contemporaneously inhabited neighboring buildings (e.g. B.77). Hence, northern wall of the B.108 had been not protected (in term of support) by any other counterpart of nearby building and it needed extra pillar to maintain all the way vertical position.
