The feature number: 7340 (U.22016-cut, U.22003-infill) was assigned in 2014 for proper registration of the foundation trench. Its performing in the past was involved with the erection of the northern wall (F.3626) of B.108. All the rationales allow to interpret beyond all doubts that mentioned wall as well as the trench were part of the activities that were carried out as an initial, construction stage of B.108. Hence, both of the mentioned features (7340 and 3626) must be regarded as one episode maintained to prepare underground mudbrick-structure.
The Foundations as the lowest and supporting layer of the building must have resisted and transfer the vertical pressures generated by planned edifice. The constructionists realized that the structure requires footings that ensure stability against overturning as well as sinking into soft midden deposits. Hence they performed deep foundations made of mud-bricks joined by mortar proper enough to transfer the weight of above structure (B.108) directly to the ground. Accordingly, they erected walls from the bottom of previously prepared foundation trench like described one F.7340. It was dug between already existed southern wall of B.77 (F.3096) and a retaining wall F.3646 from the south. During the digging activities the latter feature was truncated and partially demolished, so its remnants mark the authentic shape of the foundation cut (U.22016).
The execution of the trenches intended most plausibly to seek stronger and more stable ground. Described construction of the deep foundations aimed to keep in steady state the structure on solid base. In that case wall (F.3626) was placed intentionally as underground foundation tier, whose aim was to transfer the weight of whole edifice to the ground. The all told show complicated building techniques and tremendous effort that both were incorporated with a need of erection the structure on the particular spot. |
