Description:
Space 489 is a "midden" area located between Space 488 and the building 52 complex. It is contemporaneous with B.77 and Space 488.

It was first partially excavated in 2012. The excavation of the midden sequences during this time were completed with arbitrary layers defined mostly by spits rather than natural deposits, until the rubble deposition. Under the rubble deposition was another layer of midden which was excavated stratigraphically.

In 2015 the space was excavated again to ensure the safety of the section that had been left in 2012. The section was stepped back one meter, allowing us to excavate the upper deposits of the midden until building rubble. These deposits were excavated following stratigraphic layers.

Essentially after the abandonment of B.132, its side room was used as a refuse area. The western limit of the space is currently defined by the limit of excavation. The eastern end of the space was truncated by the construction of B.108, foundation trench F.7106. In the Neolithic it was likely limited by the eastern wall of B.132, F.7126. Soon after its use as a midden, the southern wall of B.132 collapsed creating a level of rubble. In this rubble was the evidence of a second story constructed from different bricks. The later phase of this midden area most likely extended until the outer walls of the B.52 complex although this evidence has again been truncated by foundation trench F.7851.

Essentially, three phases of occupation can be associated with the space:

Phase 1 represents the midden deposits that accumulated after the abandonment of B.132 in B.132's side room.
Phase 2 represents the demolition of the remaining walls of B.132.
Phase 3 represents the midden occupation that accumulated above the later demolition of B.132.
