Discussion: This unit is at the same elevation to floor [10106] but is very burnt. A slot excavated through the contexts showed no layering that would be typical of floor surfaces even if burnt. It seems probable that this is the infill from the building below or floor packing for building 45, that had been charred by the fire and is probably equvilent to 10086 on the northen side of the dividing floor level wall F. 1423. The plaster floors may have suffered the same as the plaster wall coverings and not survived the heat or at least could not be recognised as surfaces during excavation. 

 

Recognition: plaster floor [10106] turned to a black infill as it as chased north 

Definition: no layering visible suggesting the contexts was below floor packing rather than burnt surfaces 

Execution: Trowel, slot excavated 

Condition: hot 

Consistency: Firm 

Colour: vrty dark grey 

Texture: sandy sily 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: occasional pot and bone; moderate charcoal flecks 

Post-depositional Features: Animal burrows 

Basal Boundary: not excavated in 2004
