Unit 1022
Category: layer dug in 1995
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 1.8m x 0.5m x 0.1- 0.2m
Discussion: Midden deposit in Ct VII.15. As preserved, restricted to NW corner of room where it overlies brick-rubble fill (1023) which has irregular surface. 1022 appears to lie in a hollow within this fill bounded by irregular lumps of decayed brick, rather than cut into 1023 as such. To N 1022 overdug slightly in poor light conditions; to S drying out and heavy root disturbance left it distinguishable by feel only. No visible internal layering although finds (bone etc.) tended to lie fairly flat.

Unit description: Medium-sized unit. Lots of apparent digestion. Many smaller bones seem acid-etched. Is there lots of dog poop here, or could this be an effect of burial in a manure/trash pile? Larger pieces seem unaffected. Very little carnivore gnaw. Not much identified; seems quite fragmented with sharp edges. A lot of black staining, but color seems pretty uniform, mid-brown. Mostly sheep-size. Sample 77, >4mm, 100% sorted. The material matched the dry sieved, with largely sheep/goat size fragments, and a high degree of digestion. There was less than 5% burning.Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
