Unit 1073
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 1.90m N/S 2.40m E/W
Discussion: Dumped/ consolidation deposit contains discrete 'parcels' of material within it. Deposit possibly arbitrarily divided from 1073 because of presence of bone cluster. Number of bones , clay balls within this deposit suggest a domestic dump, although between 5-10 % bone inclusions throughout may indicate a more specialised dump, butchery ?.
Execution: mattock, trowel
Condition: dry
Consistency: firm
Colour: 2.5y 4/4 olive brown
Texture: sandy silt clay
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: <2% bone, clayballs, obsidian, charcoal, burnt brick, plaster/chalk flecks, stone (querne ?)
Post-depositional Features: cut on south by 1090

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: A large faunal assemblage from a unit described as a dump/packing and containing a dense concentration of bone. A relatively high proportion of the unit is identifiable and the fauna represented are dominated by sheep/goat with considerably fewer cattle (including an artculated radius and carpals), small amounts of pig and equid and frequent, possibly articulated bones from a dog. Additionally there was a vertebra from an infantile human. All parts of the caprine and cattle skeleton are present and, compared to other units, the major meat bearing bones are more common. Of the bones that do not provide as much meat, the phalanges are fairly low in number whilst metapodials seem to be moderatley represented. Unlike units 1091 and 1092 there are caprines of a range of ages with both the occasional infantile bone and very worn teeth, although the majority of the teeth seem to come from young to middle-aged adults. The assemblage has been moderately fragmented, burnt bone is present is fairly low proportions and tend to be the smaller fragments of bone which are burnt to low temperatures. Digested bone is present in average proportions, whilst gnawed bone is more common than in other units. Overall this unit, which the excavators suggested could be a dump associated with butchery, is unlikely to be the waste from primary butchery because of the high proportion of meat bearing elements. The material appears to be more like post consumption waste with relatively low integrity as there is the remains from number of animals from a range of taxa. A piece of worked bone, a polished rib, was recovered from this unit and showed where the rib had been scored in manufacture to snap tansversely in the correct position. Also there is part of a bone ring that is very roughly shaped and polishing is minimal suggesting that it broke during manufacture and was never finished. One pathological bone, a cental+fourth tarsal fused to a tarsal 2+3, of a caprine was found. 4mm flotation sample #1, 100% sorted, was recorded for diagnostics only. The sample contained mainly well fragented bones from 003 sized animals displaying some digestion and little evidence of burning. More of what appears to be a complete dog skeleton was found in the sample. Additionally there was a relatively high proportion of rodent microfauna and a few fish bones.Figurine Records: Yes
