Unit 10807

Category: layer    dug in 2004

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: fill

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial

Description: fill of post retrieval pit located against east wall FAST TRACK

Discussion: NB/skull (10834) reallocated to F.1711 therefore this assocaited fill also reallocated from F.1705 to F.1711. For reason see publication 2012 (SF 29/04/11)/

the fill mainly consisted of plaster and clay was firm and difficult to distinguish from the surrounding matrix. Some charcoal was also included.

Ther fill was mainly recognised by the sectio, but its limits were difficult to define.
At the very lower part of the fill a skull and some other disturbed human remains were found. Possibly when the cut (10808) was made, an earlier burial was disturbed.

The fill contained an cluster of clay balls and stones - unit 10805.
Although initially two cuts with two fills were distinguished later on they were taken together. Cut 10803/10808. Fill 10802/10807.

The plaster debris in the fill conta'ns many fragments of red paint (not sampled as this is a fast track area).

Note 21-07-04 (BSD)
After further investigation it became clear that this feature had been underdug. Fill 10807 had not been completely removed along the bottom of the pit. Thus the cut is somewhat deeper than originally thought (see drawing 04/913). The skull (unit 10834) is in fact a large inclusion within the fill 10807.
