Interpretive Categories: neolithic female with fetus in pelvis

Data Category Information: none

Discussion: This is an adult female who had a full term fetus in her abdominal and pelvic regions. The fetal head (13163) was engaged in the birth canal which strongly suggests she died in childbirth. Minimally she was fully pregnant at death. In addition, the female was headless. Two cervical vertebrea, including C1, were found in the burial pit displaced to the south. Several cervical vertebrea, including C2 and probably C3-C5, were also missing. This individual appears to be the 1st individual to be buried in the platform (F.2225). The cut in the platform floor in the southern part of the larger pit conforms to her position in the grave. The disarticulated elements of SK13133 (head, legs, arms) were found directly above the northern aspect of the female's body. The burial fill of all these individuals (SK13162, 13163, 13133) was sampled together. The relationship of SK13133 and SK13162 is unknown. It is possible the placement of the disarticulated/articulated elements of SK13133 above SK13162/13163 was intentionally and related to 13162's death in childbirth. It is also possible that the bones of SK13133 are not related to the events surrounding the death of SK13162 and her baby (13163). The burial cut for SK13133 is further to the north then the one for SK13162/13163 and may represent a separate burial event.

Body: On right side in a flexed (crouched) position, oriented west-east with the upper body to the west

Head: head is missing

Right Arm: extended alongside body with the lower arm under left arm near the elbow and under the right leg near the knee; right hand extends out from under the right leg with the phalanges at the left foot

Left Arm: upper arm arm crosses the chest , the elbow is bent with the lower arm extending to the southern edge of the burial pit; the hand is is turned down at the right knee

Right Leg: flexed at the hip and knee under the left leg; foot extended towards southern edge of burial pit

Left Leg: left leg flexed at hip and knee with the knee at the left elbow and the foot extended just east of the right foot. The left part of the femur is directly over the central part of the fetus below it.

Other comments: the headless skeleton of the female has a full-term fetus in the abdominal and pelvic region.
