Discussion: Description: mud structure of feature 12 Discussion: Basin located in north west corner of space 107 abutting walls to N and W Continued in use through 2 phases of space i.e. pre- and post- blocking. Constructed from a silty clay forming a rim to east and south which varies in width from 50mm - approx. 90mm. the original height is unknown, it may have been raised through its life-cycle but because of weathering etc. this was not noted, it is more likely that its original height is as recorded because of its relation to the walls. The structure appears to have been constructed in 2 phases with a primary modelling of the basin and a 2nd layer of mud thickening - this was evident during excavation as the soil sheered off with an interface of concentrated salt - these two phases were the same constructional event. The abutment of this structure was post the plaster rendering on the north and west walls as the wall plaster underlay the structure. The basal horizon with underlying make-up (1532) was very clear, breaking off on a sharp boundary which was covered in salt crust. So the story at this stage is;- walls go up make-up goes in, walls are plastered. Plastering continues throughout the life-cycle however.. We don't know whether the basin is re-rendered every time the walls and floor are- very likely. See feature 12 for overall discussion
