Unit 18346
Category: Layer dug in 2009
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: room fill,surface
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This layer is currently believed to be a surface - although only excavation next season and a view of it in profile is likely to confirm either way. Only finds visible at top of unit were removed with brush and trowel - otherwise unexcavated - 55l of it removed by the end of the 2009 season.
18346 being a surface was suggested by the quantity of finds (obsidian, pot sherds and stone artefacts x3, x4 and obsidian blade x5) apparently lying flat on the surface. Careful troweling confirmed a difference in texture and density (more dense, more silty) and the darker brown-black colour also make 18346 distinction from 18341 clear.
Because the artefacts found on the surface 18346 were found cleaning 18341, they have been assigned as x-finds
Recognition: mire vivid dark brown-black in colour, and more densely packed than 18341. Also, multiple pot sherds and stone artefacts and obsidian were seen lying fairly flat.
Definition: pale grey border at interface with F.3303, 3310, 5061, 3311
Execution: only finds visible at top of unit were removed with brush and trowel - otherwise unexcavated
Condition: warm, dry, shade from tent
