Unit 1884
Category: skeleton dug in 1997
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: skeleton
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: A tightly contracted burial of a child / adolescent, in or just beneath SW platform of space 112. (Mellaart's shrine VII.9)
The burial has its head to the ESE, into the room and feet close to the W wall of the building. It was found too close to the present surface for a cut to be visible but has clearly been squashed into a confined space (note the attitude of the head and hands). There was no evidence for binding but the presence of both patellas is indicative that the body was fleshed when interred.
A clay ball fragment lay in front of the face - though this association could be fortuitous - see (1880). The presence of other burials under this platform is shown by a skull (burial 1885) immediately to the S.
Ref for Shrine VII.9 is Mellaart 1964 (the 3rd prelim, report) pp 52-4 & plate Va. The report makes no mention of burials in this room.
