Unit 20704
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: Heterogeneous deposit
Data Category Information: Deposition: buried soil
Dimensions: 2.22 m x 1.93 m x 0.09 m
Discussion: U. 20704 is a deposit of extremely dark, humus-rich, partly burnt heterogeneous soil. It is bounded by several walls (f. 3981, 3963, 3951) and a mud brick deposit (u. 20267). It is likely one of the latest strata left in the trench at the end of the 2012 season since it abuts f. 3951, a late wall, and should be excavated early in 2013.
2013: This unit was excavated before the removal of f.3951, a late period wall (likely Roman). It was abutting this wall, then transitioned into the characteristic construction material orange in color and indicating Neolithic materials, which was cut into directly for the construction of wall f. 3951.
Recognition: clear after removal of 20269 - change to extremely dark soil
Definition: defined by lack of mud-brick, walls f. 3981, 3963, and 3951, and E. edge of trench
Execution: excavated by trowel and brush
Condition: mostly cool
Consistency: loose to friable, moist
Colour: mostly greyish brown
Texture: clay loam
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: charcoal, bone
Post-depositional Features: animal burrow-- especially distinct along f. 3951
Basal Boundary: diffuse-- change to orange-gray (redeposited Neolithic mud brick)
