Unit 21243
Category: Cluster dug in 2017
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: cluster ochre stons (cache)
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Material: ochre; Deposition: primary deposition
Discussion: this layer represent a cluster of three ochre stons in pit F7432, infill U21246 the earlier infill below plaster base U21245. the ochre stones are situited in the northern part of the pit. They have been found buried by a small mudbrick ridge. The presence of these stones in this position may indicate a voluntary deposit (cache). The cluster appeared when we removed the mudbrick construction and the diametre of the cut become larger. It is possible that this cut has been in foncotion for two levels of occupation. The later level of the pit where the diameter is smaller. This level is contomporary with hearth (F7402, 7426) and floors (U21240,U21244). The earliest level of phase II with the larger cut and completly circular. We think that cluster contomorary with level as well as with hearth F7431 and plaster floor U21247 (phase II
).
We can imagine the importance of stones of ochres as materials for decoration the building. But also the fact to be hidden it gives its extra value. Decorate a building can be a gesture of daily life but can also be a gesture to "symbolic" connotation.
